Australian politicians struggling to not upset the Trump administration by refusing to endorse its proposal for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians was only the beginning. There’s only faux bipartisanship on a two-state solution; many in the Coalition are deeply hostile to Palestinians. But on an issue of real bipartisanship — the need to help Ukraine defend itself against Vladimir Putin’s invasion — Donald Trump presents a far greater challenge.

There’s an understandable inclination at first blush to see the US presidential election outcome as auguring difficult times ahead on the global stage. President-elect Donald Trump’s iconoclastic rhetoric on Ukraine, Gaza, Taiwan, tariffs and more in the lead-up to the election, coupled with his transactional approach to business, alliances and international institutions, and of making America great again appear to be zero-sum propositions for which the world is bracing for impact.

The Tax Practitioners Board has finalised four of nine outstanding matters relating to the PwC tax policy confidentiality, with no further action recommended. TPB chair Peter de Cure advised Senate estimates last June that the tax agent regulator had nine cases on its books related to breaches by the firm and former partner Peter Collins of the code of professional conduct in the Tax Agent Services Act 2009.

A major part of the deal involved the US and UK helping Australia acquire nuclear-propulsion submarines. This decision by the Morrison government controversially entailed backing out of a A$90-billion deal with a French company to purchase 12 submarines.
