There is an oft quoted saying that a week is a long time in politics. The phrase is doubly relevant in a year which not only sees some 64 nations across the world (about 49% of the world’s population) undergoing national elections and driving democratic change, but also as a metaphor for the exponential growth in usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) globally, itself as a driver for change. Unfortunately, as with any powerful technology, AI can be used as a force for evil as well as for good.

The phased compliance timetable is now set, with the first deadline in just six months' time The AI Act was published in the Official Journal of the EU on 12 July 2024, a couple of months later than expected, and will become law on 1 August 2024. The compliance deadlines for the European Union's (EU) new cross-sector legislation on artificial intelligence (AI) have been revised following a delay in publication, notwithstanding that the text is settled. EU officials have recently confirmed to Osborne Clarke that the final step in this process – the publication of the definitive text in the EU's Official Journal – has been delayed until mid-July, with some commentators suggesting 12 July.
