This week’s mailbag includes questions about Oregon’s sobering postseason performances, Oregon State baseball, the Pac-12’s master expansion plan, and settlement discussions with the Mountain West. I also received questions about the Trail Blazers’ upcoming sale, Boise State’s 2025 football season, and the withdrawal notice of five teams that left the MW. Thanks to all who submitted questions. The best ones made the cut. If you’re a paid subscriber, I appreciate your support and readership.

I don’t know what Anson Aroz was supposed to do on Friday night when he ran toward home plate in the eighth inning and encountered the opposing team’s catcher positioned in the basepath without the ball. Friday brought no justice for the two best baseball teams in the Pacific Time Zone. Oregon lost to Utah Valley in the Eugene Regional, 6-5, amid a terrible call and an unfortunate ejection. Oregon State, the host of the Corvallis Regional, lost 6-4 to Saint Mary’s. Both teams face elimination.

Mike Leach had little tolerance for nonsense and took amusement in life’s absurdities. I think he’d have shaken his head and smiled a little at the notion that the College Football Hall of Fame relaxed the rules to make room for him on Thursday. The National Football Foundation announced an adjustment to the eligibility criteria for coaches to be considered for induction, dropping the win percentage requirement from .600 to .595. Leach’s win percentage: .596.

It wasn’t that long ago that Mike Aresco hoped the Big 12 and ACC would stand alongside the Group of Five schools in an attempt to keep the Big Ten and SEC from running away with it all. Aresco was working as the commissioner of the American Athletic Conference. The negotiations to expand the College Football Playoff to 12 teams were ongoing.

Nothing a billionaire likes more than telling another billionaire to pound sand.

Phil Knight will not try to buy the Trail Blazers. “Five years ago, when I was a younger man, I had a great interest in being a part of the Portland Trail Blazers franchise," he said in a statement. "However, at my current age, I can confirm that I no longer have interest.”

“There’s nothing a billionaire loves more than telling another billionaire to pound sand.” Phil Knight and Alan Smolinisky made an offer for the Trail Blazers. Jody Allen told them to pound sand. Is Knight a buyer? Column: https://t.co/VbbFf7NELR

“Unbelievable. Oh wait… totally believable,” wrote one reader. Another youth sports embarrassment: https://t.co/CC1MjKRkCu https://t.co/tYjEKCC9q9
