The Oregonian is the primary daily newspaper serving Portland, Oregon, and is part of Advance Publications. Established as a weekly by Thomas J. Dryer on December 4, 1850, it holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously published newspaper on the West Coast of the United States and has been issued daily since 1861. With the highest circulation in both Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, it ranks as the 19th largest daily newspaper in the nation. Its Sunday publication is known as The Sunday Oregonian.

Washington County has agreed to pay a former sheriff’s deputy $950,000 to settle a whistleblower lawsuit alleging she faced retaliation for reporting that a fellow deputy ignored a homeless man’s sexual assault claim. The county Board of Commissioners approved the settlement for Melissa Canning on its consent agenda Tuesday night.

The man who has been accused of reckless driving in Portland and recording himself while doing so for videos he posted to Instagram – sought to paint a picture of himself as harmless in a Multnomah County courtroom on Tuesday. Oscar Burell Jr. told Multnomah County Circuit Judge Chanpone Sinlapasai that he is not a threat to the community. The 33-year-old said he is a caregiver to his grandfather who is “under the weather” and helps him get vitamins and medicine.

Portland police, partnering with county and federal officers, made 46 arrests and seized 44 pounds of fentanyl powder, 2,507 fentanyl pills and 22 pounds of methamphetamine in February, they announced Tuesday. They made the arrests throughout the city, supported by a $15,000 grant that allowed overtime pay for sheriff’s deputies and Portland police.

A federal judge Tuesday sentenced the president of Eugene’s J.H. Baxter & Co. wood treatment plant to 90 days in prison for lying about the company’s illegal handling of hazardous waste at the site. U.S. District Judge Michael J. McShane called Georgia Baxter-Krause, 62, an “absent president” who took little responsibility for what occurred. “The fact that you lied when confronted suggests you knew the practice was not ‘above board,’” McShane said.
