Buttler asked "am I part of the problem?" after Afghanistan’s victory by eight runs guaranteed England’s early exit from the Champions Trophy. It is the third global cricket tournament on the trot in which England have been terrible and, frankly, nobody should be surprised they were humiliated by the Afghans.

ENGLAND’S top stars have been promised a jackpot following The Hundred’s big sell-off. Players such as Test captain Ben Stokes and white-ball skipper Jos Buttler will rake in vastly increased salaries playing in the tournament. The auction of the eight franchises will bring around £560million into cricket with money split between the 18 counties, MCC and the grassroots game. Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady are among the investors.

CHELSEA owner Todd Boehly has plunged into cricket by paying £40million for a 49 per cent stake in Trent Rockets. The team competes in The Hundred, which is a short-form 100-ball event that started in 2021. Boehly has been in talks with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) since October when the first round of bidding ended. The Chelsea chief extends his portfolio to cricket alongside fellow Blues director Jonathan Goldstein via business Cain International.

ROCKY FLINTOFF has scored a century for England’s second team at the age of just 16 years and 291 days. The son of former England captain and all-rounder Andrew Flintoff made 108 from 127 balls for England Lions against a Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane. Flintoff snr is coach of the Lions squad and watched as his lad leapt in the air, removed his helmet, kissed his bat and made an unexplained talking motion with his hand after reaching three figures.

ALEX HALES has claimed he was asked “are you still taking drugs?” during a furious bust-up in Bangladesh. Notts and former England opener Hales was banned for 21 days and dropped from the 2019 World Cup after twice testing positive for recreational drugs. He now makes a lucrative living on the T20 circuit and currently plays for Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League.

Andy Peebles was a DJ, music aficionado and a huge cricket fan and some time commentator. He 'phoned me only a couple of weeks ago to check a piece of obscure trivia. Too many RIPs at the moment.
