ABSTRACTFreud’s paper on the three caskets is revisited. His view that the lead casket represented death is supported by extracts from The Merchant of Venice, in particular the song, “Tell Me Where is Fancy Bred”. It is argued that the acceptance of death is a necessary step in the transformation of romantic love to mature love. With experience of reality a disillusion of romantic idealisation becomes possible, but this means that losses have to be accepted and mourned.

I noticed our backyard was starting to sprout green grass after some April showers. Some of my perennial plants are beginning to peek through the mulch in my flowerbed. I look forward to the pink, red and yellow tulips of spring. Springtime is a favorite season for many as the colorful blossoming bulbs begin to appear. Of course, growing grass means mowing, but that activity promotes physical activity. I am thankful about being able to enjoy the colors of spring and our upcoming summer.
