THE Garda Commissioner says there are no leads in the mystery case of missing sheep farmer Michael Gaine. Drew Harris insists that it remains a missing persons probe and not a criminal matter as of yet, adding that cops do not know what happened to the 56-year-old who vanished without a trace.

GARDA Commissioner Drew Harris is set to write to the Ceann Comhairle after incorrect claims were made by politicians about strip-searching protesters. The allegations - which Harris said were "inaccurate" - were made under Dail privilege earlier this month. Around 40 of the group 'Mothers Against Genocide' protested outside Leinster House on March 31 over Israel's bombardment of Gaza.

THE number of gardai could plummet to 12,000 within the next three years, it has been warned. The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) fear a mass exodus from the force due to a spike in retirements expected over the coming years. As it stands, there are currently just over 14,000 sworn members in the force and the Government has pledged to recruit 5,000 more over the course of their tenure. But AGSI insists that it is simply not possible because of the recruitment crisis.

THE Justice Minister says the gardai have given him no indication that missing Kerry farmer Michael Gaine was murdered. Jim O'Callaghan was fully briefed on the case by senior investigators at Castleisland Garda Station in Kerry. Sheep farmer Gaine, 56, vanished on March 20 from Kenmare, Co Kerry, and there has been no communication from him, nor any reported sightings anywhere since.

GARDA sergeants and inspectors feel like they are being treated like “second-class citizens”. And mid-ranking officers have hit out at new conduct legislation, saying it will damage morale in the force. The new rules, which formed part of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Bill 2024, came into force this month.
