THOSE charged with crimes in court could walk free on the same day with an electronic tag instead of being remanded in custody. Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan told the Prison Officers’ Association Annual Conference in Galway he was committing to the initial rollout of the system by the end of the year “at the very latest” for those on temporary release.

GARDAI have upgraded the case of missing farmer Michael Gaine to a homicide investigation to obtain access to mobile phone records. The move, which grants investigators greaters powers, also allows them to declare places as crime scenes and have them examined by forensic experts. And Gardai can also apply to the court for warrants to search homes and properties, and seize and examine materials including phones and laptops.

The Garda Representative Association blasted the Commissioner, claiming he has single handedly removed community policing in Ireland. And they say he has “failed” to implement policies recommended by the Commission on Future Policing.
