THOSE charged with crimes in court could walk free on the same day with an electronic tag instead of being remanded in custody. Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan told the Prison Officers’ Association Annual Conference in Galway he was committing to the initial rollout of the system by the end of the year “at the very latest” for those on temporary release.

GARDAI have upgraded the case of missing farmer Michael Gaine to a homicide investigation to obtain access to mobile phone records. The move, which grants investigators greaters powers, also allows them to declare places as crime scenes and have them examined by forensic experts. And Gardai can also apply to the court for warrants to search homes and properties, and seize and examine materials including phones and laptops.

THE overcrowding crisis in Irish prisons is worse than ever with 358 inmates forced to sleep on the floor on one night this week. The Prison Officers' Association has hit out at successive justice ministers' failure to tackle the issue, which is causing mayhem behind bars across the country. Its president Tony Power insists that it creates a dangerous situation for both their members and inmates, whose rehabilitation is also impacted.

DREW Harris has left a “legacy of fear and mistrust” with rank-and-file members, frontline gardai insist. The Garda Representative Association blasted the Commissioner, claiming he has single handedly removed community policing in Ireland. And they say he has “failed” to implement policies recommended by the Commission on Future Policing. Harris was not invited to the GRA’s annual conference for the second year in a row as they say they have no confidence in his leadership.
