Analysis - Welcome to the circus. The announcement of an historic three-party coalition at Parliament's Banquet Hall was wild enough to rank alongside the best reality TV. There were three ring masters - Winston Peters, Christopher Luxon and David Seymour - each with spectacularly different ideas about what they were there to do. There was a metric tonne of policy announcements - far too many to examine in any kind of detail on the hoof.

It could just as well have been John Key in the suit Christopher Luxon filled at Parliament on Friday. An hour after the (almost) final result of the election was announced, the National Party leader breezed into a room at Parliament for a press conference. National had lost two seats. It no longer had the numbers to govern with the ACT Party alone. It must strike a deal with NZ First, a scenario National had given grave warnings about less than a month ago. But no worries, Luxon reckoned.

Fourth time lucky. After the wondrous John Key years, National tried three successors. None of them measured up. In November 2021, Christopher Luxon took over a party in tatters. He was picked by 32 caucus colleagues in desperation, as much as hope. Today, he is Prime Minister-elect. With almost all of the ordinary ballots counted late last night, National had 38.95 percent of the party vote, and ACT 8.98 percent. Between them, they were clinging to 61 seats, the barest possible margin to govern.
