In a landmark case which established the modern law of negligence and the principle of duty of care (Donoghue v Stevenson, 1932), Donoghue sued a ginger beer manufacturer after becoming seriously ill and finding a decomposed snail in her bottle. The court ruled in her favour, concluding manufacturers owe a duty of care to consumers even in the absence of a contractual relationship.
