While waiting to launch my boat this past weekend, I witnessed a humble example of puristic behavior that I found admirable and worthy of writing about. Of course, it was Memorial Day weekend, which meant that every fool in Texas with a bay boat was waiting in line to launch from the only public pier in Baffin Bay. Honestly, launching any vessel (even when you have help) is a daunting task for novice boaters. If you don’t know much about boating, you can read the rest as a primer of procedure.

Spring is almost over, and as a part-time rancher, I’m dealing with lots of babies. Not human babies - mine are mostly grown. However, some of our animals on the ranch are giving birth this time of year, and it’s my job to help protect them from predators and keep adequate feed out for the mommas. Most of the animals pretty much take care of themselves, but the sheep are always problematic. I’m reminded of a story that happened a few years ago at the camp where I used to work.

I called my little brother this week to wish him a happy birthday. I actually like the guy now, but there was a time when we were sworn enemies living in rooms across the hall from each other. If you were raised in a family of boys, you’d know what I mean. It was like that for us growing up. He and his wife live in Indiana where brother Colin is a senior pastor with multiple degrees in theological studies. They raised three boys, all Purdue graduates with honors.

I have two conundrums to wrestle with today. The first is that I’ve been sitting here in my study for 10 minutes trying to figure out why I came to my study. Oh, now I remember. I’m here to write this article. Of course, that reminds me of my other challenge - what to write about. I know I had a great subject in mind all week that had Pulitzer Prize potential, but I can’t remember what it was. The title pretty much gives away the entire substance of this piece.

By the time your eyes hit this article it will be the middle of Holy Week. As a Christian, I always try to observe each day of Holy Week as it relates to the sequence of events leading up to Christ’s crucifixion and then resurrection. The crazy thing for me is that all of it seemed to be part of a plan - like it was meant to happen that way, and I believe that indeed it was. God had a plan.
