Vail Mountain closed China Bowl and Teacup Bowl this week, but Sun Up and Sun Down Bowls remain open as the mountain heads into its second-to-last weekend of the season. The decision to close the eastern bowls was a game-time decision from the resort’s operations crews, who determine terrain openings based on conditions and guest patterns this time of year.

Vail Resorts is beginning to trim down its corporate workforce as part of the company’s “resource efficiency transformation plan” that was first announced in September. Employees were notified this week that the company has decided to permanently close its HR shared services operating unit in Broomfield, with the first separations expected to occur on June 2.

Vail Police have a small corridor to issue the new fines the Town Council has created for trucks without chains, yet someone has already received $4,150 in penalties — the maximum allowable — for blocking the interstate in a chain-up zone. The chain-up zone in Vail begins about halfway through the mile marker 178 portion of interstate 70 for trucks headed eastbound. For westbound vehicles, the chain-down zone begins roughly at mile marker 179.

Beaver Creek is down to its final week of the ski season, and Vail Mountain has two weeks remaining as of Sunday. Blue Sky Basin closed for the season on Sunday on Vail Mountain, along with the Cascade chairlift (No. 20) and several other lifts. The Back Bowls, including Sun Up, Sun Down, China and Teacup Bowls, remain open. Vail Mountain has recorded a cumulative 314 inches of snow this season and is boasting a 68-inch mid-mountain base as of Monday. Vail Mountain’s Closing Day is set for April 20.

On Wednesday, Stephanie Whitmarsh pleaded not guilty to felony embezzlement accusations. The felony charges pre-date the felony charges she is also facing in a case involving her daughter, hit-and-run suspect Sidney Whitmarsh. Judge Rachel Olguin-Fresquez, after accepting Stephanie Whitmarsh’s not guilty pleas for the class-4 felony of theft, the class-4 felony of cybercrime, and the class-6 felony of unauthorized use of a financial transaction device, set a five-day trial to start on July 28.
