BARRINGTON – The stars were aligned for Barrington’s state-ranked softball team on Friday at the Fields of Dream where it was hosting the Class 4A sectional championship. In the Sweet 16 game, the Fillies secured their 16th sectional title with a 2-0 shutout over familiar postseason rival Huntley. Barrington (33-3-1) will face Fremd sectional champion St. Charles East (23-15) in its own supersectional at 6 p.m. Monday.

When it comes to sectional openers, hall of fame Barrington coach Perry Peterson seems to always have his team ready for action. The Filles got an active bat from Ohio State pledge Reese Cullen in the bottom of the fourth inning when she slugged a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead that the Mid-Suburban League champs never relinquished.

Since taking over the program in 2016, Jarod Gutesha has taken his St. Charles East softball team to eight sectionals. Also the school's girls golf coach, Gutesha will look for a sectional hole-in-one on Friday when his team will play for the Class 4A Fremd title. After a leadoff home run by Vikings second baseman Amanda Poniecki, Saints junior Makayla Van Dinther (10-9) quickly settled down and her No. 6-seeded team rallied for a tense 3-2 win over No. 1 Fremd on Tuesday in Palatine.

Senior Hailey Lucas threw a 4-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead top-seeded Fremd past No. 9 Conant in the championship game of the Class 4A Glenbard East regional. Coach Josh Teschner's Vikings (28-5) will face St. Charles East in the 4:30 p.m. semifinal of the Fremd sectional on Tuesday. It was the Vikings' 23rd regional crown in program history and third under Teschner in the last five seasons. Avery Sadorf (2 hits) singled in the bottom of the third inning to give Fremd a 2-1 lead.

Mimi Cline had plenty of people cheering for her on Friday when her Barrington softball team was going for a remarkable 23rd straight softball regional championship. Her two sisters, who live out of state, and many of her father's friends were on hand at the Class 4A Lake Zurich regional. And Mimi didn't disappoint them. In fact, the Barrington senior center fielder had them on their feet in her very first plate appearance.
