AbstractMesoscale convective systems are a class of storm linked to extensive flooding and other destructive hazards in many regions globally. In West Africa, soil moisture impacts provide a valuable source of predictability for mature storm hazards, but little is known about mature storm sensitivity to soil moisture in other climatic regions.

How sensitive are Sahelian Mesoscale Convective Systems to cold pool suppression? AbstractUnderstanding the physical processes driving deep convective storms is an essential prerequisite for understanding the wider tropical atmosphere. Cold pools driven by rainfall evaporation are a ubiquitous feature of Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCSs) that have especially pronounced upscale effects in the climate of the West African Sahel, through their modulation of the regional monsoon circulation.

1 Introduction Deep moist convection dominates the tropical atmosphere. Up to 75% of tropical rainfall is attributed to convective storms (Feng et al., 2023; Roca et al., 2014). Yielding strong latent heat release from storm rainfall (C.

1 INTRODUCTION It is well established that East Africa (EA) seasonal forecast skill for March–May (MAM, long rains) is currently much lower than that for the October–December short rains (e.g., Batté & Déqué, 2011; Dutra et al., 2013; Mwangi et al., 2014; Walker et al., 2019).
