CHARLESTON — One of South Carolina's biggest economic development catches of the electric-vehicle era is on the hunt for a U.S. headquarters site that would create more than 1,000 high-paying jobs. Scout Motors expects to make a decision about the investment this summer, according to documents reviewed by The Post and Courier that show the company has pitched an "opportunity to do more business" together to officials in the Palmetto State.

RIDGEVILLE — Volvo Cars plans to cut $1.87 billion in expenses while it continues to explore how it will boost production at its Lowcountry factory to counter the new 25 percent tariffs on vehicles it imports to the U.S. market. CEO Håkan Samuelsson, who rejoined the company earlier this month, announced the "accelerated cost and cash action plan" on April 29 while reporting a drop in first-quarter earnings and a 6 percent decline in car sales.

A swath of unspoiled nature along Lake Marion will remain under Uncle Sam’s care for at least another four decades. Santee Cooper last week approved a new 40-year lease with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for 8,000 acres owned by the state water and power utility. The rural parcel along the north shore of the lake is made up of four federally managed "units" known as Bluff, Dingle Pond, Pine Island and Cuddo.

A Connecticut lawyer and bank executive who’s heading to prison for embezzling $7.4 million over 10 years spent some of his ill-gotten gains on a high-end Lowcountry getaway — and to pay a local tax collector. Investigators said James Blose, 56, used his trusted position as legal counsel at two Northeast banks to orchestrate the scheme, which was discovered about two years ago and involved diverting proceeds from loan and real estate transactions to his personal use from 2013 to 2023.
