The Wildcats lost their regional-opening game to West Virginia (3-4) and were forced to play an elimination game against USC Upstate on Saturday, which they won (7-3) to remain alive. On Sunday, Kentucky’s backs were still against the wall as they faced Clemson but made quick work of the Tigers (16-4) to face West Virginia for the right to advance.

The 2025 Wildcats managed to pull out a winning record of 29-24 but they were just 13-17 in SEC play and ended the regular season being swept by Vanderbilt before falling to Oklahoma in their first game of the SEC Tournament.

The 12-team playoff will now have straight seeding, which is a model that will reward the selection committee’s top-4 teams with the first four seeds as well as first-round byes. According to ESPN, this decision was reached unanimously by the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director Pete Bevacqua.
