BANNING — One does not have to look far to see video of Banning High nose tackle Deven Ray Jr. on the football field, dominating. There he is on Instagram wearing No. 99 and tossing Desert Hot Springs blockers aside like rag dolls and throwing ballcarriers down with bad intent. He wears pink socks and gloves because it was a Breast Cancer Awareness pink-out game and his mother, Christina, is a cancer survivor. But that is only part of Ray’s remarkable story.

RIALTO — It is a match the Rialto High girls volleyball team loses. But then adversity is a frequent traveling companion of the Knights and star middle blocker Kayjanai “Kay Kay” Gatlin. Down two sets in the match and tied 6-6 in the third set, Gatlin takes a perfect set from freshman Priscilla Diaz and pounds the ball between the Aquinas High defense. The Knights celebrate. Aquinas wins anyway, but no sweat.

RIALTO — The first-place showdown turned into a hoe-down for the Summit High football team. The SkyHawks ran all over host Eisenhower en route to a 37-0 victory that secured the Sunkist League title. Though Summit (9-1 overall, 3-0 league) didn’t score in the third quarter, the fourth quarter was played with a running clock because of the 35-point mercy rule. Summit rolled up 267 yards on the ground and outgained Eisenhower 309-26 overall.
