AbstractSleep is an important component of cardiovascular (CV) health. This review summarizes the complex relationship between sleep and CV disease (CVD). Additionally, we describe the data supporting the treatment of sleep disturbances in preventing and treating CVD. Recent guidelines recommend screening for obstructive sleep apnea in patients with atrial fibrillation. New data continues to demonstrate the importance of sleep quality and duration for CV health.

The study was approved by the Ochsner Health Institutional Review Board and was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05286593). Electronic health records were queried to identify patients with a history of a myocardial infarction and a previous cardiac PET scan demonstrating a large TMS (≥ 20% of the LV) without evidence of viability.

Apparent treatment-resistant hypertension (aTRH) is defined as uncontrolled blood pressure (BP) despite using ≥3 antihypertensive classes or controlled BP while using ≥4 antihypertensive classes. Patients with aTRH have a higher risk for adverse cardiovascular outcomes compared to patients with controlled hypertension (HTN).
