ONE of the rare moments of humour when watching football is when both sets of fans unite in directing to some toiling referee. The taunt “you don’t know what you’re doing!” is a surefire indicator that the ref has lost the plot. This chant comes to mind when I hear Labour politicians talking about their flagship GB Energy plan.

The Adams administration yesterday filed public notice of contracts for the Queens and Bronx borough-based jails indicating substantial delays in their completion. The proposed contracts allow for approximately 7 years to complete each building - four years beyond the 2027 legal deadline to close Rikers. This comes after news that the administration is also planning to increase capacity in each of the four borough jails, with a three-fold increase to the capacity for women in the Queens jail.

The Campaign to Close Rikers, representing more than 160 organizations across the City, condemns Mayor Adams’ bald-faced attempt to circumvent the law and evade responsibility for the closure of Rikers Island. Just two days prior to August 31st, a day that marks four years until the legally mandated shuttering, Mayor Adams’ remarks are as disingenuous as the actions he proposes are immoral.
