It’s that time of the year again: spring snowstorms, graduation party planning, and for high school athletes, Signing Day. The best student athletes lead their schools in academics and athletics, and for Conifer High School, a star-studded signing day saw 12 Lobos commit their skills to the next level on April 24. Families, coaches, teammates and friends cheered, took countless pictures and held back tears as the seniors spoke on their high school experiences and impending futures.

Just days before Colorado’s Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders land at their new NFL homes in the draft, the Buffaloes took one more opportunity to honor the two program-changing players in a big way. On April 15, a social media post announced that Hunter’s and Sanders’ jersey numbers (No. 12 and No. 2, respectively) would be retired, never to be worn again by Colorado football players. The two were honored during the Buffs’ Spring Game on April 19 at Folsom Field in Boulder.

It’s dangerous for the field when the reigning champs bring back nearly everyone from last year’s dominance. But that’s the case for Evergreen’s girls lacrosse squad. At 5-2, the experienced Cougars know winning another state championship isn’t out of the question. In fact, it’s a bit of an expectation now, whether they like it or not. “They understand the culture, they understand the expectations,” said Head Coach Rachel Sanford.

Every year, adversity hits high school athletes like “Good Riddance” by Green Day during a graduation ceremony. But not many have faced the challenges Liam Graham has in his high school career. For the past three years, the Standley Lake High School senior struggled to identify the cause of the sharp pains in his legs and body. Still, he didn’t stop playing football or running track, battling through the pain to try to live like an average student athlete.

Local fans of professional women’s soccer have enjoyed 2025 so far in the Denver area. Just two months after the city was awarded the newest National Women’s Soccer League expansion team, a blockbuster matchup has been announced for this summer in Commerce City. On June 26, soccer enthusiasts can catch the U.S Women’s National Team square up against the Republic of Ireland at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Conifer girls soccer is now in Class 3A, which means a couple of things. First, it provides an opportunity to potentially play other 3A opponents in the postseason, which could bode well for the Lobos’ playoff chances. However, Conifer is still in the 4A/3A Jeffco League, so stacking wins in the regular season will be difficult, as it always is. Head Coach Amy Miller-Heikka (formerly Civiello) knows that taking a young team to new heights will be challenging.

Last spring, Evergreen High School’s girls soccer team won the 4A state championship with a 2-0 shutout over Lutheran. It was the Cougars’ first state championship since 1997, signaling a new era for the program. The Cougars finished 14-5-1 overall and 7-1 in the in the 4A Jeffco League (tied for best with Golden and D’Evelyn). Now, expectations are higher, and the pressure is on to repeat. But not to Head Coach Peter Jeans.

Westminster High School has never had a state champion in any sport. That all changed in February. Senior Dakota Hull cemented herself as an all-time legend in her last season as a high school wrestler. She capped off an undefeated season (20-0) by pinning Chatfield’s Ryen Hickey early in the second period to become a 5A state champion in the 145-pound weight class. Hickey was also undefeated heading into the match and finished 41-1.

Just four teams remain standing in each of the 5A and 6A boys and girls basketball brackets. Major upsets and lightning runs have headlined the state tournament so far, and local basketball squads are that much closer to calling themselves state champions. All games will be played at the Denver Coliseum. Championship Saturday hosts all 5A and 6A boys and girls title games. In Class 4A, boys and girls Great 8-round games will be played at the Denver Coliseum this Wednesday, March 12.
