OWOSSO – A nationwide protest of Donald Trump and Elon Musk drew dozens to Owosso Saturday. Called “Hands Off!,” the protests, which included more than 1,200 demonstrations across the country according to the Associated Press, were aimed at bringing attention to Trump administration moves such as the firing of federal workers, mass deportations, Department of Education cuts, scaling back protections for transgender people and other actions.

CORUNNA – A man who stole a jar intended to collect money for Toys for Tots will spend the next few years in prison. On Dec. 7, 2023, Brett Beauchamp strolled into the Owosso Shell station, 1119 W. Main St., resolved, he said, on stealing something he could trade for drugs. Instead, he took the jar containing money for Shiawassee County Toys for Tots. On March 21, the 35-year-old repeat offender was sentenced in Shiawassee County Circuit Court to 37 months to 74 months in prison for the theft.

CORUNNA – A Saginaw County man, sentenced last year to more than 30 years in prison, was back in Shiawassee County Tuesday asking a judge for a new trial. David M. Ortega was found guilty by a jury in April 2024 of multiple felonies in connection with terrorizing an ex-girlfriend in Owosso. On Tuesday, in Shiawassee County Circuit Court, his appellate attorney asked Judge Matthew J. Stewart to consider a motion for a new trial.

Stewart was elected as Shiawassee County Circuit Court judge in 2014, it didn’t take him long to begin implementing plans that focused on helping community members who come before him in the courtroom. Shiawassee Drug/Sobriety Court was founded in 2016, and three years later, SMART (Supportive, Motivational Approach to Rehabilitation and Treatment) Court, also known as mental health court, became a part of circuit court.

CORUNNA – In the latest batch of defendants nabbed in a sting by law enforcement to solicit potential child predators, just one has taken his case to jury trail. Lancelot James Bond was found guilty of all charges last month, and on Friday, in Shiawassee County Circuit Court, learned he would be going to prison for about twice as long (a minimum of five years) as the defendants who accepted plea deals.
