It is Good Friday, the day that God, in Christ, dies. It does not get darker. Most fortunately, Easter is just a couple of days away, but let’s not rush. God gave us these days with Him lying in a grave for a reason. Last Sunday, Palm Sunday, my local church rushed through the triumphal entry and spent most of the service focused on the Passion – the events of Christ’s trial and crucifixion.

Maundy Thursday and the “meat” of Holy Week is upon us. This is a time when we should examine our mistakes and confess them. I hope you go to church this evening and enjoy the Eucharist, communion, a Celebration of the Last Supper, however your church refers to it. By the time Sunday morning rolls around, our sins are forgiven – the price paid, the victory won. And yet we still act like losers. Typically, it is a big stretch to impose religious thinking on political activity.

Since Trump won the election and came into office, we do not hear much from environmentalists. But that does not mean they are not active, particularly in other parts of the world where their roots had gone deeper. The more I read, the more I think they just don’t like people. Perhaps it was the publication of “The Population Bomb” in 1968 when they first showed their true colors. But in 1968 there were very real, very consequential environmental issues.

This story is just annoying. It bounces around like a golf ball in a box, clearly trying to lead the reader to a place it is afraid to go on its own. Essentially, three stories are being covered. One – DOGE efforts at The State Department. Two – efforts at State to root out anti-Christian bias. Three – the appointment of a new interim HR head for State that was overtly Christian in his opening remarks.

It has not taken long. After this past weekend, big time college sports, in the age of the transfer portal and N.I.L., has turned undeniably pro. The facade crumbled. In the church circles I run in it is rare to hear government policy discussed directly. But some of the recent efforts by DOGE have struck home. Specifically, federal funding for refugee services channeled through churches has dried up. Different churches are reacting differently. Locally, where I live, we raised the necessary money in a few weeks using matching grants from some well-endowed churches. Others are being a bit more dramatic.

Last weekend saw “protests” in many locations around the nation. My wife and I happened through the local one. There was nothing organic about it. The people involved were clearly hired or gullible. The timing was clearly set to coincide with the stock market turmoil. It was not a demonstration or a protest; “the people” were not speaking; it was a stunt, organized and staged by someones unknown. Lot of stunts lately, especially in California.
