Thursday I wrote, concerning domestic politics, about “coercion in the language of grace.” In that post I wrote, “That is a moral compass that is not merely broken, but that no longer resembles a compass, or even the pieces of a compass.” As the stupidity has piled up in reaction to last night’s military action, I am struck by just how inadequate that language was in describing the situation.

President Trump has called for Iran’s unconditional surrender as Israel continues to rain destruction on it. That is, under the circumstances, quite reasonable. But I have my doubts about Iran’s ability to do so. Their leadership is driven by a fanaticism that defies reason. They are driven by a rock solid belief that they are acting in God’s name, with God’s assistance. That is pretty hard to overcome.
