By John SheaPublished Apr. 15, 2025 • 9:57pmPHILADELPHIA — Justin Verlander clearly was frustrated as he stood at his locker addressing a group of reporters after the Giants’ 6-4 loss to the Phillies Tuesday night. He was taking deep breaths. He was pausing before answering questions. He was seeking ways to capsulize what had just happened. “It’s tough … it’s tough,” he said. Win No. 263 was 12 outs away, an eternity in the baseball world but close enough for Verlander to taste.

By John SheaPublished Apr. 14, 2025 • 10:57pmPHILADELPHIA — Only two Major League Baseball teams have yet to make a roster move this season, and they played each other Monday night in the opener of a four-game series in the so-called City of Brotherly Love. One is the Phillies. The other is the Giants. And for that, Tyler Fitzgerald is grateful. Despite the second baseman’s early-season batting woes, management stuck with him, and the decision finally is paying dividends.

When asked about the joy of hitting in Yankee Stadium, Lee said, “The results are talking on behalf of me.”NEW YORK – One of the beauties of baseball is that all major-league stadium configurations are different, just like the weather and elements in the accompanying locales, so it does no good to waste time fretting over whether a ball that reaches the so-called “short porch” in the Bronx would clear the giant brick wall in San Francisco. Or vice versa.

Here at Candlestick East, a.k.a. Yankee Stadium, the Giants are playing a three-game series under brutally chilly conditions better suited for football or cross-country skiing. They’re certainly not baseball friendly. Game-time temperatures the past two days were 44 degrees and 41 degrees. The rain was steady. The winds were tricky. The field was sloppy. NEW YORK — Wilmer Flores might have figured out a key to cold-weather hitting. Never walk on the field until it’s your turn to bat.

The Giants made a rare lineup change, moving Mike Yastrzemski into the leadoff spot and dropping LaMonte Wade to sixth. It paid off with five runs in the first inning. NEW YORK — In the first two weeks of the Giants’ season, the lineup remained basically the same, depending on whether the opposing starting pitcher was a lefty or righty. There were zero roster moves. The team remained exactly what it was coming out of spring training.
