The Liverpool Central School District has a new interim superintendent. The Board of Education approved Brian Nolan for the role, and he started Tuesday. He will serve through at least the end of June. Nolan spent most of his career with Syracuse City Schools and has taken on multiple interim leadership roles since retiring. He replaces Douglas Lawrence, who requested to return to his position as deputy superintendent by April.

Central New Yorkers will hear about the earth’s global challenges and ways to solve them at a symposium this weekend. “Haudenosaunee and Indigenous Matrilineality: Original Teachings for a Livable Future” is presented at Syracuse University. Michelle Schenandoah is the founder of the non-profit Rematriation magazine and website… focused on women’s voice and their role in their respective culture. The concept is about having an awareness of how the decisions we make now have lasting impacts.

February is Black History Month. In our latest look at local African American history, we learn about the luminaries who took the Declaration of Independence by its words, that “all men are created equal.” Although it passed in 1776, it took nearly another decade for abolitionists to help 1,500 people escape slavery, many of them along the Freedom Trail through Central New York. The City of Syracuse played a central role to aid freedom seekers along the Underground Railroad.
