Corcoran High School students gained some insights today/Tuesday as to what it takes to become a successful astronaut for NASA. School alum Jeanette Epps gave a presentation complete with video from her mission in space last year. Epps says she wasn’t tested the least bit when she had an extended stay because she always dreamt of going there. She said the galactic skyline was breathtaking.

The steps of Syracuse City Hall were packed Wednesday with protestors speaking out against the Trump Administration’s ICE raids and detentions. The warmer days and cold nights couldn’t be more perfect for Central New York’s maple syrup producers as it’s their last chance to tap the sap! SUNY ESF maple producers in Tully already had to wait longer than usual this year due to the very cold winter temperatures. Syracuse city auditor suggests makeover of Living Wage Ordinance

Boosting wages for those who work for the city of Syracuse and its many contractors is a possible solution to reduce the city’s highest poverty rate. A new report on the Living Wage Ordinance from City Auditor Alexander Marion reveals it’s been difficult to enforce the 2005 law. It requires city vendors to pay their workers at a rate higher than the minimum wage. Marion said none of the city’s vendors were instructed to participate. He says the Living Wage Ordinance needs a makeover.

Syracuse launches Adopt-a-Trail program to clean local green spaces

Syracuse residents can now take an active role in keeping local trails clean through the city’s new Adopt-a-Trail program. Mayor Ben Walsh announced the initiative, which invites individuals, businesses, and organizations to maintain sections of the Onondaga Creekwalk and the Empire State Trail along Erie Boulevard East. Participants will help by removing litter, reporting maintenance needs, and hosting three cleanup events throughout the year.
Liverpool school board appoints Brian Nolan as interim superintendent

The Liverpool Central School District has a new interim superintendent. The Board of Education approved Brian Nolan for the role, and he started Tuesday. He will serve through at least the end of June. Nolan spent most of his career with Syracuse City Schools and has taken on multiple interim leadership roles since retiring. He replaces Douglas Lawrence, who requested to return to his position as deputy superintendent by April.

Central New Yorkers will hear about the earth’s global challenges and ways to solve them at a symposium this weekend. “Haudenosaunee and Indigenous Matrilineality: Original Teachings for a Livable Future” is presented at Syracuse University. Michelle Schenandoah is the founder of the non-profit Rematriation magazine and website… focused on women’s voice and their role in their respective culture. The concept is about having an awareness of how the decisions we make now have lasting impacts.
