First Minister John Swinney has called on the UK government to match his £25 million pledge to help workers affected by the closure of the Grangemouth refinery. A transition fund has been set up help up to 400 employees affected by the decision of Petroineos, a joint venture between Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos and Petrochina. Amid calls for more to be done to keep the plant open, Mr Swinney called on the UK government to bring forward other projects, such as carbon capture.

It keeps me up at night and it drives me to get up in the morning every day and get to work. We’ve made real progress in Scotland through measures like our game-changing Scottish Child Payment. But there is more to do.

John Swinney has described the decision to close the Grangemouth refinery as “premature” and said more time is needed to put options for the site in place. Speaking at First Minister’s questions, he said he supported SNP backbencher Michelle Thomson’s call for a pause in the process. He said he had asked the Prime Minister to work with the Scottish Government and the refinery owner Petroineos to avoid closure before all options have been considered.

First Minister John Swinney will today tell the Prime Minister that he wants more investment in public services, an end to austerity and progress on developing a carbon capture project for Scotland. Mr Swinney and Sir Keir Starmer will meet privately in Edinburgh ahead of the first full meeting of the UK Government’s Council of Nations and Regions.
