First Minister John Swinney has called on the UK government to match his £25 million pledge to help workers affected by the closure of the Grangemouth refinery. A transition fund has been set up help up to 400 employees affected by the decision of Petroineos, a joint venture between Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos and Petrochina. Amid calls for more to be done to keep the plant open, Mr Swinney called on the UK government to bring forward other projects, such as carbon capture.

First Minister John Swinney will borrow Labour’s latest slogan this week to call for a “new direction” on the economy. The SNP leader will demand an “evidence-based” approach to immigration and rejoining the EU, two issues on which Labour has already refused to give any ground.

Referring to comments made by John Swinney, the first minister, last week that the Scottish NHS is "managing to cope", she said: "It feels upsetting to hear that we are being described as coping because there is not an emergency medicine consultant that I have spoken to that feels that that is the case.

In a rich country like Scotland, I simply cannot endure the idea that it is acceptable that even one child languishes in poverty. It keeps me up at night and it drives me to get up in the morning every day and get to work. We’ve made real progress in Scotland through measures like our game-changing Scottish Child Payment. But there is more to do.
