A FARMER who twice caused closures of the A358 between Williton and Taunton three years ago because of potato and silt mudslides will have to pay out more than £40,000 as a consequence. Experienced potato farmer David Mitchell was last week prosecuted in Taunton Magistrates Court by the Environment Agency. Mitchell, of Hillcommon, near Wellington, rented a field in Combe Florey when hundreds of tonnes of mud and potatoes were washed onto the road by heavy rain.

The pair, from Hillcommon, were between them fined and ordered to pay costs by magistrates in Taunton last week totalling more than £14,000.

( )FIREFIGHTERS from Porlock helped tackle a camper van which caught alight on Exmoor on Sunday (June 22). They joined a crew from Lynton sent to the blaze in Coscombe car park, which happened just after 7 pm. The crews found the vehicle ‘well alight’ when they arrived and the occupants were safe. They removed two gas cylinders before they could set to work putting out the flames.
