This afternoon a PSNI spokesman said: “Detectives investigating a security alert in Newtownards on Friday 30th May have charged a 42 year old man with a threatening communications offence and possessing explosives with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to property. “He is due to appear at Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court on Monday 2nd June.

    The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) said they were called shortly before 5am this morning to attend a fire at the former Faughan Valley school in Drumahoe. Forty-five firefighters were in attendance with six pumping appliances and one aerial appliance also dispatched. The Drumahoe Road is currently closed at the junctions with the Glenshane Road and the Fincairn Road due to the fire at the derelict premises.
