Photo by Steven Bisig/MLB Photos via Getty Images Cal Raleigh has been named the American League Player of the Week by MLB, with Raleigh sharing the honor with Tampa Bay Rays 3B Junior Caminero. Christian Yelich of the Milwaukee Brewers took the award home for the National League. Cal earned the honor on a week where he went 8-for-23 (.348) with six homers and 10 RBI, scoring six runs, getting on base at a .444 clip and slugging 1.130 (1.575 OPS). He also, memorably, stole a base.

Photo by Paul Bereswill/Getty Images Casey Lawrence has yet again been selected and added to the 40 man roster by the Seattle Mariners. For roughly the 72nd time (okay it’s five) in the past 60 days or so, Lawrence was chosen out of AAA-Tacoma to provide bullpen depth for Seattle. The corresponding moves sent last night’s debutant, Blas Castano, back to the Rainiers, and also lead Seattle to designate catcher Blake Hunt for assignment.

Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images No player had a bigger impact on the first month of success for the Seattle Mariners than Jorge Polanco. With a whopping 2.19 win probability added, both the quality of his hits and when he hit them provided the M’s with more important and impactful performance than ANY player in MLB through March and April. Just for kick(change)s, the only other player above 2.00 WPA in the season’s first month and change was Andrés Muñoz.

Photo by Steph Chambers/Getty Images A brilliant friend of mine is a Yankees fan. This occasionally places me in the unenviable position of hearing reasonable, glowing discussion about Aaron Judge. Fans at times express exasperation at the lauding of national media flung at the feet of Judge and Shohei Ohtani, and the immense media focus upon them. I promise you, this year and the last in particular, it is merited.
