This week has shown us that spring can usher in a week of nice temperatures along with gale force winds and some badly needed rains. It also brings us gardeners into the yard to begin working on a myriad of projects that we have created over the winter season. There is never a better time to get started on those projects before the planting season begins. I always like to say that I prefer to have all of my big gardening projects done by Memorial Day weekend.

Do you ever become disappointed when things don’t go your way in the garden? Maybe a plant doesn’t thrive or maybe there was a color scheme that didn’t turn out or maybe the spring flowers didn’t bloom as profusely as you wanted. I don’t mean to be the bearer of bad news, but a garden is not a controlled environment, as it has a mind of its own. One thing I have learned through the years is that a garden is an ever-changing environment from one year to the next.

It is amazing what a difference a week can make in our environment of spring. As soon as the snow disappears, life reappears in the garden with gusto. Not only do plants begin their start for the new season, but the ground itself is alive with activity.

April is moving right along and by the end of the month, our trees and shrubs will begin to leaf out and cast a fresh emerald hue to the scene. As nice as it has been lately, we would almost think it is nearing the end of April, but that is not quite the case. Not to worry, though, as with all the things and planning going on this month, the time will fly by!This month is a great time to take inventory of all the shrubbery in our yards and gardens.

Oh alas! The warm weather was settling in and then some late season snow moves into the area for some needed moisture. There is another month ahead of us that could still give us a good snowstorm or two so choose your projects wisely. A few years back I remember the winter that would never leave and recall a snowfall of over a foot of snow near the third week of April, so it could still happen. Do I think it will?
