CLEMSON — The game followed Clemson's usual script. Clemson got behind on May 31 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Clemson rallied, thanks in large part to Cam Cannarella's clutch hits. But in a 9-6 loss to West Virginia (42-15) in the second game of NCAA Tournament play, there was another repeat the Tigers could ill-afford. Lucas Mahlstedt, who gave up a homer on his first pitch against USC Upstate, gave up a game-tying double on his first pitch to the Mountaineers.

CLEMSON — The hits were piling up for USC Upstate. And in all the wrong ways for Clemson. Not only did the Spartans take an early lead on NCAA Tournament regional host Clemson with Johnny Sweeney's solo bomb, but Tigers starter Drew Titsworth tagged two USC Upstate hitters with baseballs in the top of the fifth. The bases were loaded, no outs. Clemson's 2-0 deficit was on the verge of doubling or tripling.

CLEMSON — As North Carolina coach Bill Belichick sat with Clemson's Dabo Swinney for an hourlong interview on ACC Network, the Super Bowl winner took an intense interest in the national champion's acronyms. Belichick wanted to know about BYOG, or "Bring Your Own Guts," which Swinney made famous after the Tigers' 2015 win over Notre Dame. Then Belichick inquired about the "ROY Bus," which is Swinney's shorthand for Clemson being among the "Rest of Y'all" rather than a respected power like Alabama.

CLEMSON — The practicality and usefulness of in-game interviews with coaches has long been debated, but the procedure is more or less standard. A broadcast crew fires off questions about the first few innings. The coach, held hostage by the headset around his ears, spouts whatever uncontroversial or mildly cheeky thoughts he can muster until he's freed.

CLEMSON — Clemson has secured the No. 11 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, which begins May 30. The Tigers (44-16) will play host to USC Upstate, Kentucky, and West Virginia at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Clemson will open with USC Upstate. Clemson and Arkansas are the only programs in the country to host a regional each of the last three years. It's a remarkable streak for the Tigers, who missed the NCAA tournament altogether in 2021 and 2022.
