I am new here to The Wolfpacker, but no stranger to the NC State beat. For two and a half seasons I was the NC State beat writer for the Raleigh News & Observer.

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. - It was always going to be Knightdale for Antonio Watson. When his playing days were over Watson knew he wanted to be a coach. More importantly, he knew he wanted to coach at Knightdale High School. That’s where his uncle, Anthony Byrd, coached. Watson played under Byrd his final two years of high school, where a solid prep career led him to the collegiate level - first at Saint Augustine’s in Raleigh, then Bluefield State.

Help is on the way for the N.C. State men's basketball program, but Zymicah Wilkins has one more goal to accomplish first. Wilkins and Christ School will aim for a second consecutive state championship on Saturday. The Greenies (25-2) will take on Carmel Christian at 7 p.m. at Providence Day School in Charlotte. Wilkins, the No. 3 player in North Carolina according to 247 Sports, signed with the Wolfpack on Nov. 14 as part of a two-man freshman class for N.C. State.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Jordan Page is only 15. He’s a 6-foot-5 lefty and probably the next big basketball star to come out of Wake County, averaging almost 24 points per game for the Broughton Capitals. At 15, he already looks, moves, and talks like a pro, a man of few words. The few words that come out are about one thing — winning. When Page and the Caps were defeated in the John Wall Holiday Tournament in December, Page didn’t want to talk about all the attention or scoring on that stage.

It’s all happening really fast for C.J. Rosser, Jr.The Northern Nash sophomore is still getting used to the Division coaches showing up to practices and games. It’s been an adjustment being at the top of the scouting report for opposing teams. The constant interview request and autograph seekers after games, all new. Rosser better get used to it.

CLEVELAND TOWNSHIP, N.C. — December football is not for the weak. Rolesville is looking like one of the strongest remaining. The fifth-seeded Rams went on the road, again, and knocked off top-seeded Cleveland 49-6 to advance to the 4A East Regional Finals, where they’ll face Cardinal Gibbons in a rematch. For the second straight week, Rolesville (13-1) went on the road. For the second straight week, Rolesville hung 40 points on a higher seed. Rolesville has outscored their last two opponents 93-12.

CLEVELAND TOWNSHIP, N.C. — For the second straight week, Cleveland’s dynamic offense was held way below its scoring average. This time around, though, the defense was more than willing to pick up the slack. In the No. 1 Rams’ 21-3 win over No. 16 Ashley in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A football playoffs, the defense answered the bell, holding Screaming Eagles 29 points below their season average.

STANHOPE, N.C. — Southern Nash has always had an embarrassment of riches at running back. In the opening round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A football playoffs, the 14th-seeded Firebirds showed off their depth in the backfield, running over 19th-seeded Harnett Central 56-14. Ten different running backs got at least one touch, with five backs scoring touchdowns. Southern Nash finished with 474 rushing yards and did that without the services of senior Tylik Mitchell.
