TORONTO - It was different this year. These weren't the same Maple Leafs. They played a different style, a playoff style, a Craig Berube style. They were playing the way they needed to play to win in the playoffs. They knew how to win close games. They responded to adversity. They were tough. They were heavy. Their stars had embraced the right mentality to finally win. Not so much. The first two games of their second-round series with the defending champs have proven to be an aberration.

TORONTO - No hyperbole here: Game 5 against the Florida Panthers is the most important game of the Maple Leafs' season and likely in the playoff careers of their stars. After squandering a 2-0 series lead, the Leafs have surrendered all the momentum in the second round. The Panthers are looking comfortable playing their nasty, punishing brand of hockey. How the Leafs - especially the core - respond could not only dictate how this series unfolds, but the future of this roster.

Craig Berube stayed the course in the first round when adversity struck. A 3-0 series lead over the Ottawa Senators was suddenly cut to one after the Toronto Maple Leafs lost Games 4 and 5. Berube had every reason to alter his lineup for Game 6 in a meaningful way. Instead, the Leafs coach made only one change - a change that paid off in a big way - when he promoted Max Pacioretty to the second line. The Leafs won Game 6 to advance to the second round.

SUNRISE, Fla. - Auston Matthews still has yet to score a playoff goal against the Florida Panthers. The Maple Leafs will very likely need that to change if they're to win two of the next three games and overcome the defending Stanley Cup champions, even if Matthews is doing plenty of good things otherwise. Matthews didn't score in five games in the second round of the 2023 playoffs against the Panthers, and he's been held off the board in each of the first four games of this series.

Weighing a Matthews-Marner split and bottom-six shakeup: https://t.co/3M4u79PVGA

Worth noting in light of possible lineup changes for the Leafs in Game 5: Under Craig Berube, the team doesn’t always practise with the same lines/pairings they’re going to play with. In other words, practice combos do occasionally change by game time.

Craig Berube seemed to hint at the possibility of lineup changes in Game 5. “Game-time decisions,” he said when asked. Those game-time decisions, he added, were coach’s decisions, not injuries.
