Just 21% of council figures say their authority is better off as a result of Labour’s actions since entering government last July, according to LGC research. LGC’s latest Confidence Survey asked whether the government’s decisions have meant their council’s financial position is better or worse off. Some 14% said they were ‘a lot’ worse off and 25% said they were ‘a bit’ worse off. Two fifths said they were neither better nor worse off.

Dozens of organisations have joined forces to call for “significant new funding” for social care in the upcoming spending review. The Local Government Association (LGA) has brought together almost 90 other stakeholders – including Care England, the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, the National Care Forum, and a wide range of other national and local bodies to sign a joint statement.

The number of “twin hat” directors with statutory responsibility for both adult and children’s social services has fallen to a record low, according to the Association of Directors of Children’s Services (ADCS). In its annual update for 2025, ADCS says that as of 31 March 2025 there are 11 twin hat directors, of which one is an interim appointment. This is the lowest level since ADCS was formed in 2007. In 2008, there were 13 twin hatters.

Birmingham City Council and the government have rejected a trade union’s claim that talks aimed at resolving the ongoing strike of council bin workers “have been sabotaged by government commissioners”. The council says it remains “fully committed” to making a revised offer after a previous attempt was rejected as “totally inadequate”. Last month, the local government minister Jim McMahon said there was a “fair and reasonable offer on the table” to resolve the strike, which began in March.
