If you're using an iPhone or iPad, you can use Apple iCloud to access your files from another Apple device, or back them up to your computer. Meanwhile, Android owners can use Google account cloud storage or Google Photos to preserve pictures of loved ones.

The more we rely on our devices, the more crucial it becomes for us to back them up – just think of all the precious photos, documents and more you'd stand to lose if your computer was ever stolen, lost, damaged or targeted by malware. Backing up means creating copies of the files on your device. If you ever encounter a serious problem, your data will remain safe and retrievable, even if the device itself is no longer usable. Luckily, backing up isn’t anything like the hassle it used to be.

The widely used PDF format supports data-saving encryption, allowing you to protect sensitive documents so that only those with the correct password can access them. In the old days, you’d need a dedicated application called a PDF reader to view PDF files – most people needed to install Adobe’s free Acrobat Reader (now called Adobe Reader) on their computers to open PDFs. Now, however, because PDF is an open standard, many devices and apps have built-in support for the format.
