I was served a hot cup of coffee from a beloved former student of mine who’s taking a gap year. A year as a barista isn’t a bad way to go, baking muffins, roasting coffee beans, chatting up the locals.

My fiction career began with the happy collision of a canoe trip and a sermon series. I was in Florida, and a friend gave me a set of cassette tapes of Eugene Peterson’s sermons on the life of King David that became his book, Leap Over a Wall. As I listened, I was struck by how much David’s story has in common with the kind of fiction I have always loved, from The Hobbit to Robin Hood to Huckleberry Finn to True Grit.

Flannery O'Connor was an inveterate rewriter, working, reworking, and deleting episodes from her stories and novels. Her archives, collected at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, bulge with deleted scenes and alternate versions of characters scarcely recognizable as the people who inhabit the published versions of her stories. O'Connor spent five years crafting Wise Blood, her first novel.
