When he won gold at the European wrestling championships last week, Giorgi Meshvildishvilli cemented his claim as one of the world’s top heavyweight wrestlers. Last year, representing Azerbaijan, the 33 year old won bronze at the Paris Olympics in the men’s 125 kg category.

The tattoo on Rajat Chauhan’s right forearm is nearly a decade old — a permanent source of motivation. He got it in 2015: the four interlocked rings, a reminder of his dream to compete at the Olympic Games. At the time, the 20-year-old already had significant achievements. A year earlier, he was part of the Indian men’s compound team that won gold at the 2014 Asian Games — India’s only archery gold from that tournament.

As a football-loving kid growing up in New Zealand, one of Sarpreet Singh’s foundational memories of the sport is from when he was a 10-year-old. He’s watching from the stands of Wellington’s Westpac Stadium as New Zealand beat Bahrain 1-0 to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. “My mother took me and my brother to Wellington for the game.
