An estimated five to 10 percent of all breast cancer cases may be directly linked to changes (mutations) in genes passed on from a parent, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). While breast cancer–associated gene mutations are relatively rare in the general population, affected individuals face a much higher risk of the disease.
