Police in Ferndale, Michigan, organized simulations, such as crash extractions, traffic stops, and drunk driving simulators, to educate Ferndale High School students about the risks of distracted driving. It's a little break from school day, but for these juniors and seniors at Ferndale High School, however, this break will hopefully change their driving behaviors for the rest of their lives.

    A popular restaurant and pub in Southeast Michigan has been destroyed in a fire. Fork n' Pint on Cass Lake in Oakland County's Waterford Township, known for its rustic charm, has been in business for about 15 years. The patio area included outdoor heaters and fire pits. The menu included salads, sandwiches and artisan pizza, according to its website. The venue had been taking reservations for Mother's Day brunch in recent days.  The fire broke out about 5:45 a.m. Thursday.

    William Smith, the former CFO of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, who pleaded guilty in a $40 million embezzlement case, was sentenced Thursday to 19 years in federal prison. Smith, 52, is also responsible for $48 million in restitution and will be on supervised release for three years once he serves out his sentence.

    Hundreds of vehicles line up Thursday outside the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Detroit for the church's food distribution event. As the church carries out its regular food distribution to several hundred Detroiters, there are worries that there won't be much food available come this time next year. The food is funded by programs from the United States Department of Agriculture, which has already seen millions of dollars in cuts.
