Eastside school to be named for Riverside trailblazer Ofelia Valdez-Yeager

The new Eastside elementary school will be named for Ofelia Valdez-Yeager, the first Latina elected to Riverside’s school board and a leader of efforts to build a Cesar Chavez memorial and museum showcasing Cheech Marin’s Chicano art in downtown. In a 5-0 vote Thursday, May 8, the Riverside school board named the planned campus after Valdez-Yeager, a community leader who died last year at 76. It will be known as Ofelia Valdez-Yeager Eastside Elementary School.
Norco College will get new gym, athletics building

Construction of a $62.5 million building with a new gymnasium is set to begin in July at Norco College. The 56,000-square-foot facility will be named the Center for Human Performance and Kinesiology. It “fulfills a very specific need on campus related to the health and wellness of students and faculty as well as the local community,” Hussain Agah, associate vice chancellor of facilities planning and development for the Riverside Community College District, said in a Thursday, May 1, email.

A memorial Mass is underway in San Bernardino to honor Pope Francis, whose funeral will take place in Vatican City on Saturday, April 25. Bishop Alberto Rojas, of the Diocese of San Bernardino, is leading the Friday, April 24, Mass, which began at 1 p.m. and is being livestreamed on YouTube, at Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral. A framed photograph of the late pontiff is displayed on the altar, surrounded by bouquets of Easter lilies.

The Redlands school board meeting went late into the night Tuesday, April 22, as trustees were set to consider a resolution calling for “fairness in girls’ sports” and again discuss rules to ban most flags and make it easier to remove “obscene” books from library shelves. More than 200 people stood in a line that wound around the district office and parking lot waiting to speak to trustees. Every board room seat was filled and those outside watched a livestream of the session.
Chino Valley schools OK complaints against California over transgender athletes

Tensions were high Thursday, April 17, at a Chino Valley school board meeting where trustees agreed to file two federal complaints against the state of California for its policies on transgender students. The board also OK'd a resolution calling on the California Interscholastic Federation "to preserve Title IX" to "protect female student athletes." The votes were unanimous.
