Future Leaders of America (FLA) has advocated for a Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing Ordinance in Carpinteria for the past six years. FLA youth’s persistent dedication led to their vision coming to fruition on July 8, 2024, when the Carpinteria City Council voted unanimously to pass Ordinance No. 778. We want to thank Carpinteria City Council members for valuing youth voices and reaffirming their commitment to our community’s health.

The peculiarity of Guía cheesesIts roots lie in the first Portuguese and Extremaduran populations that settled there at the beginning of the 16th century, after the conquest of the island. These settlers first used dried wild thistle flowers as a milk coagulant, specifically the Cynara cardunculus and Cynara scolymus varieties. The milk used for these cheeses primarily comes from Canary Island sheep.

In May, Future Leaders of America (FLA) youth in Carpinteria organized and hosted a public forum to raise awareness of the dangers of second and third-hand smoke. Carpinteria youth, parents and allies attended this event to learn and express their support for a comprehensive smoke-free multi-unit housing policy. FLA youth presented on current advocacy efforts and shared the results of their observational survey, which consisted of a sample of 21 housing complexes with at least 10 units.
