Con la firma de los Tratados Torrijos-Carter el 7 de septiembre de 1977, Panamá trazó la ruta hacia su más anhelado sueño como nación: recuperar la soberanía sobre la Zona del Canal y con ello la operatividad de la vía. Tras 25 años del traspaso del Canal a manos panameñas, vuelve a retumbar aquella amenaza que el general Omar Torrijos definió como “una ocupación colonial y una afrenta a la soberanía panameña”.
