New Zealand's parliament has voted to enact record suspensions for three Māori MPs who performed a haka to protest a controversial bill. Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke, 22, received a seven-day ban and her colleagues from Te Pāti Māori, the Māori Party, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi, are barred for 21 days.

The death of 24-year-old disabled Warlpiri man Kumanjayi White in police custody in Mparntwe/Alice Springs must be investigated independently. The man, who was under state care and reportedly living in supported accommodation, died on May 27 after being restrained by two plain-clothed officers following an alleged altercation with a security guard.

Aboriginal employee housing in Kununurra will expand with six new homes to be delivered by the Wunan Foundation through a $3.15 million State Government grant. Yawuru, Nimanburr, and Bardi woman and Kimberley MLA, Divina D'Anna said the homes will help Wunan attract and retain workers in Kununurra by offering employer-provided housing and strengthening community connections.

A New Zealand flag printed with the words "please walk on me" and laid on the floor of an art gallery has once again been packed away following public outcry, 30 years after protests forced the removal of the same artwork. The Suter Art Gallery in the city of Nelson said on Thursday it had removed the work by Māori artist Diane Prince due to escalating tensions and safety fears.

Expansive in scale and its traversing across the continent, traditions and time, '65,000 Years: A Short History of Australian Art' takes caveat away from how generations upon generations of tradition was once left on the periphery. Featuring more than 400 works, 65,000 Years opened with the return of the University of Melbourne's Ian Potter Museum, Wurundjeri Country on Friday. "It's not Aboriginal art. It's art," co-curator Judith Ryan told National Indigenous Times.
