NIT (National Indigenous Times)

The National Indigenous Times (www.nit.com.au) is a website dedicated to issues affecting Indigenous Australians. It started as a print newspaper on February 27, 2002, and has since transitioned to an online format. The publication is primarily owned by Wayne Bergmann, an Indigenous businessman and former CEO of the Kimberley Land Council (51%), alongside Australian journalist Tony Barrass (41%) and Richard Gregson, a former senior partner at PwC who now serves as a director at Hall Chadwick WA (9%). Owen Carriage, who also founded the Koori Mail, along with a group of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, originally created the publication.

    New Zealand's parliament has voted to enact record suspensions for three Māori MPs who performed a haka to protest a controversial bill. Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke, 22, received a seven-day ban and her colleagues from Te Pāti Māori, the Māori Party, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi, are barred for 21 days.

The National Gathering will take place in Port Douglas, Queensland, from September 15 to 17. It is open to Native Title and other First Nations representative organisations with a connection to Country and recognised cultural authority.

The Children and Young People (Safety and Support) Bill passed the state's upper house on Tuesday night, following crossbench amendments. The bill cleared the lower house in November. The government says the legislation "empowers" First Nations families to lead decisions about their children.

    A Northern Territory Labor MP has called for the Australian Federal Police to take over the investigation into the recent death in custody of 24-year-old Warlpiri man Kumanjayi White. Mr White, who had strong connections to the Yuendumu community, was under state guardianship and living in supported accommodation. He died after being restrained by two plain-clothes NT Police Officers following an alleged altercation with a security guard at a Coles supermarket.
