Tir Dhondy follows up the very watchable Hunting the Rolex Rippers by exploring the “epidemic” of people using a reduced-risk, legally available smoking alternative product. But if you think this show is a much-overdue celebration of the UK’s declining smoking rates, you might be disappointed. Ostensibly, Snus: Hooked on Nicotine is a documentary. However, I always feel a little uncomfortable calling TV programs like this by that name.

In 1992, before the Premier League was established, footballers were a very different species. For starters, they weren’t millionaires. Instead, they drank in the same pubs as supporters and holidayed in the same places. Supporters could recognize themselves in these players because they were relatable, less media-trained, and, in some cases, a bit fat. That very year, Micky Quinn turned out for Newcastle United against Grimsby. The moustachioed forward was often jeered for his burly physique.

Share When I started writing many years ago, I did my share of sales copywriting. It was primarily direct response copy, and the products included hair loss medication, vitamins, and a “system” to help men with dating. It was not my finest hour. I always found the work a bit grimy, but it was interesting on a technical level. When the only metric that matters is conversions, and the product is something that people don’t really need, the writing needs to dig deep.

I’ve read my share of demented attacks on nicotine pouches, but this one takes the biscuit. According to Vox, nicotine pouches are not just a gateway to cigarette smoking; they’re also a gateway to the alt-right. The media class is an absurd bunch. I’ve spent enough time around these people to conclude they’ve seldom read the books (let alone understood the ideas) that spawn the woolly talking points they want to force down our throats on social media or at dinner parties.
