Before starting a career in music, Jason Dhakal was simply a teenager who began to fall in love with neo-soul and jazz. At the same time, he began paying attention to his style. “I think [at] around 13, I started being more intentional with how I express myself and how I let people understand me through my personal taste.” But don’t get him wrong: he’s been dressing up ever since he could remember. “I guess it comes with being queer,” he laughs.

Tessa Alindogan credits her appreciation for fashion to being a keen observer of design and detail. Traveling with her family in her youth, she would take in the aesthetics of museums, from the artwork to what people were wearing. Inspired by beautiful spaces they visited, she would then rearrange the furniture at home, experimenting with composition.

The multitalented creative Kate Torralba, known to many as a fashion designer, an international touring musician, and more recently, an emerging filmmaker, has now added another feather in her cap: award-winning writer. “Amadito and Amanda,” a story about an awkward first date set up by the titular characters’ well-intended but meddling mothers, took home the third place prize for short story at the 71st Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature.
