Over the last year, Physiological Reports has been celebrating its 10th anniversary year of publication, by expansion of certain journal activities along with inclusion of special content and activities that are unique to the anniversary year (Adams, 2024; Adams et al., 2023). A highlight of the year, which comes to fruition in this issue of Physiological Reports, has been to run a Short Review competition targeted to early career researchers.

Over the last 9 months, Physiological Reports has featured special initiatives and journal content to mark its “10th Anniversary Year” of publication as a gold Open Access journal co-owned by the American Physiological Society and The Physiological Society (Adams et al., 2023). Activities to date have included an expanded schedule of Calls for Papers (https://physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/hub/journal/2051817x/call-for-papers) and the start-up of Methods articles as a distinct article type.

Damian M. Bailey and Ronan M. G. Berg contributed equally to this study. Experimental Physiology, initially entitled Quarterly Journal of Experimental Physiology, was established by Sir Edward A. Sharpey-Schafer (born Edward A. Schäfer, 1850–1935, Figure 1), who was one of the founding members of The Physiological Society (Sharpey-Schafer, 1927).
