    COLUMBIA — City Council narrowly voted to repeal its 2021 ban on conversion therapy June 17 in a 4-3 vote during a first reading. Though the repeal needs to be approved in a second reading, it’s likely the beginning of the end for a nearly two-month long fight between the city and state over a law aimed at protecting LGBTQ+ youth from a widely discredited practice. Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, as well as councilmembers Ed McDowell, Peter Brown and Will Brennan voted to repeal the ordinance.

    COLUMBIA — City Council will vote on whether to repeal its conversion therapy ordinance at a June 17 meeting. If the City Council wants to avoid losing $3.7 million in state funding, they will have to approve the repeal at the June 17 meeting for first reading and then again next week. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.Two councilmembers, Aditi Bussells and Tyler Bailey, have said they plan to vote no on the repeal. Four votes are needed to move forward with the repeal.

    COLUMBIA — A former slave plantation in Lower Richland will host a descendants remembrance day ahead of the 736-acre property's sale. On June 14, the plantation is hosting an event to honor the lives of the enslaved people and their descendants who lived and worked on the land before and after the Civil War. The estate was put up for sale for $17.5 million in May 2024. Descendants of enslaved people will also gather to collect genealogy and ancestry information to trace their family's origins.

    COLUMBIA — A deadly shooting that left an 18-year-old dead and three others injured at an Elmwood Park Airbnb has reignited concerns over short-term rentals in Columbia. Two people have been arrested following the June 6 shooting on Lincoln Street, where Columbia Police said at least 30 shots were fired. Residents of the historic neighborhood were already frustrated by the parking, trash and partying violations they say often come with short-term rental properties.
