    Charlotte’s plan to overhaul the region’s transportation system and sway a skeptical legislature officially began Monday when a trio of prominent Republican senators filed a long-awaited tax bill. The bill filed Monday is Senate Bill 145. Its primary sponsors are Sens. Bill Rabon, David Craven and Vickie Sawyer, whose district covers part of northern Mecklenburg County. Rabon and Sawyer also are chairs of the Senate Transportation Committee. Craven is a chair of the Senate Finance Committee.

    Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police suspect a motorcycle driver was speeding and impaired during a crash that killed two people and injured two others, according to a news release. The crash in the 7100 block of East W.T. Harris Boulevard in the Hickory Grove area occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday when a red 2017 Yamaha FZ-09 motorcycle traveling at an "extremely high rate of speed" collided with a 2012 Ford Fusion, the CMPD news release said.

    A filed last week against Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools alleges Rocky River High School staff didn't take a student's threat seriously enough before the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Nahzir Taylor. Taylor was shot in the head Nov. 30, 2022, shortly after getting off a school bus, according to the lawsuit filed in Mecklenburg County Superior Court.

    Some parts of the Charlotte region may break a snow drought dating back to 2022 if flakes fall Monday afternoon through Tuesday. The Greenville-Spartanburg National Weather Service says snow flurries are in the forecast early this week east of the North Carolina mountains, including the Charlotte area and east of Interstate 77. Snow flakes could fall late Monday afternoon through early Tuesday morning.
