Since I arrived in Yuma nearly 14 months ago, I’ve heard various derogatory slogans describing Yuma: “That small town at the end of the river,” “boring stop between Phoenix and San Diego,” and worst of all, “Phoenix and Tucson’s forgotten little sibling.”For better or worse, Yuma no longer fits any of those descriptions. The Yuma region is growing at an absurd rate, with new subdivisions, industrial projects, economic development and population seemingly growing faster every day.

Yuma could be on its way to simplifying the method for determining the amount of large animals allowed in certain areas in the city. The Planning and Zoning Commission approved a proposed text amendment to the city code that would simplify the calculation method for determining the maximum number of large animals allowed in the Suburban Ranch and Low Density Residential zoning districts.

P&Z denies rezoning amid 9E traffic concerns

The Yuma Planning and Zoning Commission denied a request to rezone a 33-acre lot on the southwest corner of Avenue 9E and 24th Street from the agriculture to low density residential. The property in question was annexed in 2019, and a prior request by the previous property owner to rezone it had expired. The land use designation for this property is low density residential, so this request to rezone from to low density, brought before commission on March 24, conforms with the city’s General Plan.

The Yuma City Council accepted title to land and improvements done on a parcel in the Center Pointe Commons, which is located at the southwest corner of 16th Street and 4th Avenue. This is the lot where the Slim Chickens restaurant was recently built on. With the adoption of an ordinance on March 19, the city entered an eight-year government land and improvements lease with Spencrazi LLC as the primary lessee. The city will return the land and improvements at the end of the lease.
