    Amid legal disagreements pertaining to the city’s conditions for rezoning, the Yuma Planning and Zoning Commission continued a rezoning request to a future meeting. Dahl, Robins and Associates, on behalf of Brian L. Hall Living Trust, requested a rezoning of a triangular property spanning about 50 acres at the southeast corner of State Route 195 and 40th Street from agriculture to high density residential with plans to build apartments. This property was annexed to the city in 1998.

    Last spring, the City of Yuma founded the Attainable Housing Committee in an effort spearheaded by Councilmember Chris Morris to review city regulations that directly affect the development of residential units. Throughout an eight-month process, the committee, made up of local developers, real estate professionals and other subject matter experts, inspected regulations across various city departments and finalized a list of recommendations.

    Since I arrived in Yuma nearly 14 months ago, I’ve heard various derogatory slogans describing Yuma: “That small town at the end of the river,” “boring stop between Phoenix and San Diego,” and worst of all, “Phoenix and Tucson’s forgotten little sibling.”For better or worse, Yuma no longer fits any of those descriptions. The Yuma region is growing at an absurd rate, with new subdivisions, industrial projects, economic development and population seemingly growing faster every day.

    Though Yuma is not hosting an official celebratory event marking the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s famous “midnight ride,” preparing instead for the U.S. Army’s 250th celebration in June, local government agencies are still doing their part this week. “This is just the beginning of the kickoff of America being 250 years old,” said Sarah Halligan, communications specialist at Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area.

    Yuma could be on its way to simplifying the method for determining the amount of large animals allowed in certain areas in the city. The Planning and Zoning Commission approved a proposed text amendment to the city code that would simplify the calculation method for determining the maximum number of large animals allowed in the Suburban Ranch and Low Density Residential zoning districts.
